Aros is the leader of The Volturi which is like vampire royalty. From Vultura he rules with Marcus and Caius at his side, ruling almost medieval style, handing out life and death punishments to those who break the rules.

The Volturi remain strong by keeping those with the stronger gifts close to them, having them "work" for the Volturi. It is after a visit by Edward when he pleads to have his life ended when he believes that Bella is dead, that Aros learns of Edward's gift, so alike his own, but without the need of phyiscal contact. Declining his request for death as he wants Edward to join him, along with his sister Alice. After meeting the mortal Bella, Aros is swept away by the possibilities making her a vampire would harvest, thinking the three would make a nice collection to his band of gifted vampires. This is the only reason he allows Edward, Bella and Alice leave unharmed as he wishes to see what Alice has already forseen, come to fruition.
