In Twilight we're introduced to the charming Dr. Carlisle Cullen, who is the step-father to the Cullen children. He is so much more than a father to Edward, Esme, Rosalie and Emmett, he is their creator.
Edward tells us Carlisle's story through pictures in his study which gives great insight into his character and why he has made the decision to be a vegetarian vampire.
When Bella is attacked by James, it is through Carlisle's encouragement and strength that Edward is able to save her life and have her remain human.

In New Moon, Carlisle and the rest of the Cullen family leave Forks after Jasper reacts to the smell of Bella's papercut. Despite disagreeing with his son, he moves the whole family away and agrees to not have any contact with Bella and her family.
After Edward nearly comes to the end of his life in Tuscany, Carlisle and the family move back to Forks where they find their age old enemies the werewolves. They are connected to them through common elements. Bella who is best friends with Jacob and they both wish to bring a stop to Victoria who is hunting Bella.

In Eclipse, Carlisle and his family team with the wolves to face a band of vampires that Alice has seen heading towards Forks. Their ultimate goal is to bring Bella's life to an end, but Carlisle already sees Bella as a family member and has promised to change her after graduation if that is what she wishes.
Once the newborn vampires are disposed of, the Volturi arrive and find the Cullen family standing strong, much to their surprise, they had motives of their own.

In Breaking Dawn, life seems to be settling down. His son Edward finally marries the one and only love of his life Bella. They leave the family and go to Isle Esme for a honeymoon, but return early with Bella pregnant with Edward's child. Bella has decided to keep the child, so it is now up to Carlisle to find a way to help mother and child survive, while remaining the backbone and strength of the family. If he fails, he knows he will also lose Edward.
Surprisingly, both mother and child survive, but the danger has only just begun. The Volturi has been informed of a child vampire and have come to investigate and destroy it. Once again, the Cullen family must come together with the wolves and old friends to save not just the childs life, but all of theirs.
