In Twilight, Edward is the adopted son of the mysterious Dr & Mrs Cullen. A family that arrived to the area from Alaska four years previously. The doctor is highly respected, but the family is generally avoided as they seem to not really fit in nor look to.
Edward has existed for nearly 100 years quite happily until Bella Swan crosses his path. His desire to take her there and then is almost too much to bear, so he disappears so he doesn't disgrace his family, but he doesn't stay away for long. He has never been driven away before and doesn't want to be now, not only that, his thoughts are consumed with her and as much as he tries, he can't stay away from her.
It doesn't take long for Bella to work out what Edward is and strangely, she is not frightened or repulsed by him at all. She wants to spend as much time with him as she can, no matter how much he warns her away.
After introducing Bella to his family, who are happy to see him with someone after travelling alone for such a long time, he takes her to a game of baseball. Everything seems to be going normal, or as normal as a game of baseball can be with a family of super strong and super fast vampires, when three nomad vampires cross their path. It doesn't take long for one of the vampires, James a tracker, to realise that Bella is human and a snack in his eyes.
With his mind reading abilities, Edward sees the danger Bella is in and will always be in as long as James is alive, so Bella is taken away from Forks for her own protection. Bella is a magnet for danger and removing her from Forks isn't enough to keep James away from her and so in a final show down, Edward has to save Bella's life after James bites her, while the rest of his family take care of James so that Bella is no longer in danger.

In New Moon, Edward and his family celebrate Bella's 18th birthday, despite her desire to have the day go by without fanfare. The Cullen family are happy to be celebrating a birthday, as the last one celebrated was Emmett's many years earlier. The celebrations are going great until Bella gets a paper cut which sets Jasper into a frenzy and puts Bella's life at risk.
Edward has always been torn at the risk and danger to Bella's life by being a part of hers and this confirms all he has thought and decides it is best if he and the rest of the family leave Forks ... without Bella.
While Bella goes about her life in a normal human way, or so Edward hopes ... Edward wanders without his family, tracking Victoria who was James' mate. Though in reality, he lives in depression and despair, with Bella constantly on his mind, wanting to return to her, but not allowing himself to.
Lost in despair and grief and seriously considering going back to in the very least, check on Bella, Edward receives a call from Rosalie that changes everything. He is told that Bella is dead, having jumped off a cliff. Not believing her, he calls the Swan Residence and gets Jacob who tells him that Charlie is at the funeral. Not knowing that a family friend has died, Edward automatically believes that it is indeed Bella and so he heads to Rome to see the Volturi in a request to end his life, as he never planned outliving Bella by long.
Unknown to Edward, Bella is alive, having been saved by Jacob, a vision that Alice didn't see as she didn't know at the time that the werewolves were back in Forks and out of her field of vision. Together, Bella and Alice rush to Rome to save Edward, but will they make it in time before he steps out into the sunlight and exposes himself and the vampires that inhabit the city?

In Eclipse, Edward is reunited with Bella, though they have a long way to go to rebuild through the hurt they've both been through. Not only that, Bella found friendship and comfort in Jacob Black, who is now a werewolf, the natural enemy of the vampires. Torn between wanting to kill Jacob and keep him alive for Bella, life has become even more difficult for Edward. The werewolf is in love with Bella and her feelings are a little stronger than plain friendship.
Since the return of the Cullen family, Victoria hasn't been found anywhere near Forks, but there is a growing number of newborn vampires in Seattle. With the werewolves and the strange behaviour from the vampires in Seattle, Alice is unable to see what they're planning, but all believe it is the Volturi, planning to visit and make sure that Edward keeps his promise to change Bella. The only one who doesn't believe it is the Volturi is Bella, she believes it is all related to Victoria. When she relays her theory to Alice, suddenly she's able to see a plan forming, the newborn vampires are coming to Forks.
Teaming up with the werewolves, a plan to keep Bella and the residents of Forks alive and safe is made.
In between all that is happening with the vampires and werewolves, Bella agrees to marry Edward, so a pact is made to having her changed, having her join the Cullen family.

In Breaking Dawn, graduation and the impending marriage to Bella is quickly approaching, along with the ending of Bella's human life.
The wedding goes off without a hitch, even Jacob who had disappeared, returns to see them marry. For their honeymoon, Edward takes them to Isle Esme to spend time together as husband and wife and hopefully prolong the changing of Bella. Finally they come together as man and woman, though Bella is bruised from the affair which frightens Edward, he doesn't want to hurt Bella let along kill her accidently. After much seduction, Bella once again gets her own way and Edward makes love to her ... life seemingly is perfect .. until Bella realises she's pregnant and it is advancing quickly. Edward takes her back to Carlisle to see what they can do to stop the process, but Bella has other plans.
Back in Forks, Bella has Rosalie and Esme on her side. She has decided to carry the child to term, even though it is clearly affecting her health and there's nothing Edward can do, other than sit by and watch Bella slowly die.
Bella's pregnancy also divides the wolves. Sam wants to bring an end to Bella so she can't bring this child into the world, yet Jacob is fiercly protective and leaves the pack and becomes an alpha in his own right. Before long he has Seth and Leah at his side, though he has no desire to be their leader.
Edward makes plans to hopefully save Bella when the baby is delivered which pay off. The delivery does kill Bella, but Edward injects her heart immediately with his venom and bites all over her body, which saves her life and changes her into a vampire.
Before long, Bella and Edward are again one, more so than ever before, not only that, they're learning to be parents to a baby girl that is growing just as rapidly outside the womb.
Just when everything seems to be settling down, the Volturi come to visit the Cullen family and forcably take some of them back with them, though the Cullen family are prepared to put up a fight.
