In Twilight we meet the mother of the Cullen children and the wife of Dr. Carlisle Cullen. Esme is as compassionate as she is beautiful. She is thrilled when Edward finally brings a girl home after watching him for over 90 years, life a solitary life. Even the fact that this girl is Bella Swan, a human girl.

In New Moon, Esme and the rest of her family flee Forks after Bella's life is put in danger after she receives a papercut. Even though it breaks her heart and she doesn't agree, she does what her beloved son Edward wishes.
After receiving incorrect information, Edward travels to Tuscany to end his life at the hands of the Volturi. Much to her relief, Bella and Alice bring him home alive and well and makes him to promise to never have her worry like that again.

In Eclipse, Esme joins the rest of her family and the wolves to protect their family and the rest of Forks from a band of vampires that have come to destroy her family.

In Breaking Dawn, we see Esme and Rosalie come together to protect Bella as she carries Edward's child. Everyone else wanted the pregnancy aborted, so the three of them band together to see the child delivered safely, even if it means Bella's life ends in the process.
