Jane and her brother Alec are high ranking members of the volturi Guard. They serve Aros and do his bidding. As mortals, she and Alec were suspected of witch craft and were to be burned at the stake, so Aros had them created before he planned to, but has never regretted their addition to his coven.
Her ability to inflict pain upon anyone with her thoughts makes her very valuable to the Volturi and everyone is at her mercy, everyone except Bella. Just as Edward can't hear her thoughts, Jane is unable to penetrate Bella's mind and that infuriates her.

Jane and other members of the Volturi arrive at the meadow not long after the battle with Victoria and her band of newborn vampires. It is believed by the Cullens that this was a planned manoeuver by the Volturi.

Jane returns to the same meadow with the whole of the volturi again to claim Edward, Alice and anyone else Aros desires for his coven after hearing of a child vampire. Jane and the rest of the Volturi come and find more than they expected.
